Pattern Artwork for 'Pattern & Palette 4'
The page spreads below were some of my first concept layouts of what would become Pattern and Palette 4. In the end this format proved too ambitious for the printing restrictions and time constraints we were working under. The final book has a much more minimal with less fussy page layout. This book was number 4 as it formed part of a series with other pattern designers providing the content for books 1, 2 and 3. If sales go well then there is a possibility of my working with Rockport publishing on number 5.

This is a new volume in Rockport's desktop library of color and pattern. The book and enclosed CD provides professional designers with seamless geometric patterns in a variety of color palettes to address the specific design needs of designers, art directors, and students working in textile design, product design, graphic print and website design, and advertising and corporate design. The enclosed CD contains interactive vector files to allow readers to resize motifs and patterns and change colorways to suit their own design purposes.

Graduations applied to areas of pattern can create a fascinating quality. Doing this with conventional vector software can be a time consuming job if you have to join tiles together and then have to change scale or pattern density. Because I have been so fond of this effect I built a web app to make this design process direct and easy. As new digital tools are developed, new visual languages and textures are born as creative individuals explore the limits of these new expressive forms and mediums.

I created PatternCooler to make my patterns available in any color combination. Above is the popular new PatternCooler editor which makes browsing through the massive library of patterns and editing colors and repeat sizes a doddle.
